Hiring Manager Insights for Science and Clinical Talent

Hiring Manager Insights for Science and Clinical Talent

In a recent survey, we asked scientific and clinical hiring managers to share how they evaluate and distinguish top candidates.

We also asked them about ways scientific professionals can gain an edge in the hiring process to get noticed, and ultimately, hired.

Here are a few of the questions we asked hiring managers and their top answers to consider.

What’s important to focus on during your interview?
  • 79% say to be informed about the company’s key products/services.
  • 76% say remember the basics (be on time, polite, well groomed, gracious).
  • 74% say the ability to convey how skills/background are a good fit for the job.
  • 67% say the ability to articulate personal accomplishments/weaknesses.

Top skills hiring managers are looking for?
  •  Analytical/critical thinking.
  •  Evaluation, analysis, accuracy (troubleshooting).
  •  Verbal/written communication skills.
  •  Ability to listen and comprehend.
  •  Teamwork/ability to collaborate.
  •  Good/positive attitude.

The most challenging quality to find among candidates?
  • 12% say hard skills.
  • 13% say soft skills.
  • 16% say culture fit.
  • 59% say it’s the correct combination of hard and soft skills that is the hardest to find.

The majority of hiring managers say the right culture fit is important when evaluating candidates.
So what are the top ways culture fit is assessed?
  • 64% say they ask behavioral interview questions to determine if you are a good cultural fit.
  • 61% listen to the questions you pose during an interview to determine this.
  • 57% are observing your behaviors and cues during an interview.

Competitive advantages
When candidate qualifications are equal, hiring managers consider if the candidate:
  • Was referred by a current or former employee/co-worker.
  • Started as a contract/temporary employee within the company.
  • Completed an internship within the company.

Timing to know:
  • Within the first 15 minutes of an interview, 64% of hiring managers know if a candidate is right for the position.
  • 1 – 4 weeks is the typical timeframe from the first interview to the extension of an offer.
  • However, 26% of hiring managers say it can take anywhere from 1 – 3 months to hire.

Survey methodology: The Hiring Manager Research (U.S./Canada) was conducted by RDA Group on behalf of Kelly Services®. Over 1,000 hiring managers in the U.S. and Canada were surveyed. Participants had direct hiring responsibilities for talent in healthcare, engineering, finance and accounting, IT, and scientific fields. Results represent a cross section of industries and career disciplines. Of the total surveyed, 212 were scientific & clinical hiring managers.
